Website access

When you access the website, our server records your IP address, the date and time of the request, the page requested and the information your browser sends about itself. We use these records to deliver the pages and to protect the service, including the automatic blocking of abusive traffic. We rely on our legitimate interest in operating a secure website. Routine server logs follow a daily rotation schedule with 14 retained rotations. An address blocked for abuse is kept on the block list while the block is needed.

Visit counting

We count page views on our own server. The counting record contains the event type, page path without the query string, and time. It does not store an IP address, referrer or browser identifier. The request also passes through the server logging described above. We use these counts to understand use of the observatory, relying on our legitimate interest in operating and improving it.

Messages

When you contact us, we use your contact details and the information in your message to respond. Our legitimate interest is to handle enquiries about the observatory. Information you provide is voluntary, but we need a reply address to answer you. Privacy-rights requests are handled to meet our legal obligations. We keep messages while they are needed to handle the enquiry and any related claim.

Voluntary contributions

Contributions are paid on a page hosted by Stripe, which collects the card details. Stripe makes payment information available to us, including the amount, date and contact details provided at checkout. We do not receive the full card number. We use this information to carry out the contribution arrangement and handle refund requests. We keep the records required by accounting and tax law for the periods that law sets, generally six years.

Records from the earlier service

Accounts and sign-in are no longer offered. We retain only the subscription and Stripe event records needed to meet our accounting and legal record-keeping obligations. These are generally kept for six years from the last relevant accounting entry and then deleted, unless a longer period is required by law. Other records from the earlier service have been deleted. Service providers and transfers

We use OVH for website hosting and Register.it for email. Payments are handled through Stripe. Stripe Payments Europe, Limited is the Irish contracting entity; Stripe Technology Europe, Limited provides regulated payment services in the EEA. Stripe also processes data for its own legal obligations. Its privacy information explains international transfers, including transfers to its US parent, Stripe, LLC, under the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework, and how to obtain the applicable safeguards. Your rights

You may request access to your personal data or ask us to correct it. You may also request erasure or restriction of processing. Rights to object and to data portability apply where the conditions in data protection law are met.

Where processing relies on consent, you may withdraw it at any time. Withdrawal does not affect the lawfulness of processing carried out before withdrawal.
